Tire Truing

WE NO LONGER OFFER THIS SERVICE

Ever wonder what tire "truing" is? What benefit is there in "truing" a tire? Ever have a tire vibration and no matter how many times you've had it balanced, the vibration just doesn't go away?

Tire truing is cutting the circumference of the tire to make it round. But, tires are round, you say. They are for the most part. Even new, some tires can have a slight oval shape to them. This out of roundness in the tire can cause vibrations and premature tire wear. This condition will end up with the tire being pulled off early due to abnormal tire wear. Also this condition can increase driver fatigue as they are constantly being shaken as they are driving.

Here, you will see how the tire truing process is completed on the vehicle and how improvement in tire ride and driver comfort is increased.

The picture on the right demonstrates how to setup the machine to begin the truing process.

Setup truing Machine

As you can see in this picture, the machine rotates the tire, while the technician moves the blade across the surface of tire.

Cutting of the Tire

Notice on this first initial pass where the blade has removed some of the tread rubber. Where it hasn't touched is what is called the low spots in a tire. Truing a tire is just bringing the entire tire to a consistent height, or roundness, across the entire circumference. Think of it as we are taking a tire the shape of an egg and turning it into a perfect round ball. This will remove any bouncing effect caused by the tire being out of round. No amount of balancing a tire can get rid of this.

Initial Cut Visual

Here you can see what the tire looks like after only doing the outer half. Still some low spots. This amount of imperfection in the tire you can't visually see. While cutting the tire to get the high spots to match the low spots, you can begin to see this imperfection.

Halfway

Here is what a completed tire looks like. No more high/low spots. This tire will roll perfectly smooth across the road surfaces, thus reducing the amount of bouncing to a mimimum. By eliminating this, you will increase the life if the tire, decrease driver fatigue, and reduce suspension compent wear.

Finished

This is what the tire looks closeup after the truing process is completed. This will wear away after driving on it and look smooth.
